Warrior Athletic Department Sportsmanship Standards - Parental Guidelines
High School sports are for the players. All parents associated with Seekonk High School are welcome to share in the pleasure of watching their children participate so long as their behavior does not distract the players and officials from the free flow of play. Also, it is recognized that attendance at any contest and or practice is a privilege. Any issues a spectator may have with any coach, official, game worker, administrator, or player should be addressed at the proper time and place, not on the field/court or during a game.
A parent should:
-
Make no remarks to referees, game workers, players, coaches, or spectators unless intended to convey genuine interest, friendship, or encouragement.
-
Support coaches consistently regardless of the result on the court or field. Coaches contribute many hours of their time to your children. They deserve your congratulations when the team wins and your encouragement when it doesn’t.
-
Avoid sharp remarks directed to players on your own team who make mistakes on the court/field. Allow them to learn from their mistakes.
-
Applaud superior play by both teams
-
Always remain in the spectator area
-
Not yell while an opponent takes a foul shot or as a player attempts to serve
- Provide support for coaches and officials working with their child to provide a positive, enjoyable experience for all
- Understand the role their athlete plays on the team and will encourage their athlete to perform that role to the best of her/his ability.
A parent must:
-
Never use foul language or obscene gestures at a game/practice.
-
Avoid persistent comments and gestures which express disagreement with officials, coaches, game workers
-
Cooperate immediately with any request by the game officials.
-
NOT coach their child or other players during games and/or practices.
-
Understand that they are a parent/fan and will leave the coaching to those that have been entrusted with the position.
-
Refrain from undermining or spreading ill will by passing on gossip, rumors, and innuendos which would or could destroy team morale or cohesiveness.
-
Not post on any social media site negative, demeaning or derogatory comments that may hurt, humiliate, threaten, or intimidate any player, coach, or spectator.
As a parent, I acknowledge that I am a role model. I will remember that school athletics are an extension of the classroom, offering learning experiences for students. I must show respect for all players, coaches, spectators, officials, and support groups. I understand the spirit of fair play and that good sportsmanship is expected by the parent/fan of a student athlete.
